THE search for a Maria von Trapp for Andrew Lloyd Webber's new production of "The Sound of Music" makes compelling viewing.

But there is an event in Bolton on Friday evening that has a huge charm all its own.

"Sing-a-long Sound of Music" at the Albert Halls is one of the funniest experiences I've ever had.

The audience are the stars at what has become a cult event where many people dress up in cut-down chintz curtains, lederhosen, nun's habits and brown paper to link in with the songs and plot. When a friend and I saw it a couple of years ago, we sat next to two Stormtroopers who had come in a taxi from Deane in full Nazi uniform.

One, normally sober man I know was in full bishop's regalia complete with mitre.
