Emergency services attended the scene of a crash in which a car caught fire this morning.

The collision happed at 7 am on the M60 anticlockwise between junction 17 Prestwich and 16, Clifton Interchange.

Traffic was brought to a standstill to allow emergency vehicles to the scene and one person was taken to hospital.

The fire broke out in the outside lane.

A spokesman from North West National Highways said: "Greater Manchester Fire and Resuce Service attended with traffic allowed past the scene,  although our traffic officers from Milnrow did block the carriageway temporarily to allow the fire and rescue service to get in and put out the fire."

The car was moved to the hard shoulder and the incident was cleared by 8.25am, although there was "some residual congestion".

Traffic was backed up to the M61 J1 and  to M60 J14 Bolton.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At just after 7am on Wednesday (March 27) three fire engines from Whitefield, Broughton and Agecroft fire stations plus the technical response unit from Ashton fire station attended a crash involving two cars on the M60 between junction 17 and 16.

“Crews helped to make the scene safe and were in attendance for around 50 minutes.”

The North West Ambulance Service also attended and one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A spokesman for NWAS said: "We received a call from police at 7am to an RTC.

"One patient was taken to hospital with minor injury."

One driver who was commuting at the time of the accident, said: "On the M60 approach from the M62 traffic was really heavy.

"It added about 20 minutes on to my journey, and took me about an hour to travel from Warrington to Bolton.

"I heard on the radio that there was an accident on the M60, but I didn't see anything on my way in."

Traffic data system Inrix also reported the accident but the motorway has now returned to normal.
