Nolan misses Arsenal game

Kevin Nolan counted the high cost of Wanderers latest Premiership setback but maintained that survival was still on the cards.

The Bolton captain will be suspended for the next two games - at home to Arsenal on Saturday and at Aston Villa the following week - after picking up his 10th booking of the season in Saturday's scoreless drew with Manchester City.

And with full-back Ricardo Gardner joining Jussi Jaaskelainen on the long-term casualty list, Wanderers will be without their three longest serving players at a critical stage of the season.

Gardner, who broke a rib in a first half collision with City's Darius Vassell, will be out for at least a month - Jaaskelianen having already been ruled out for the rest of the season with a back problem.

But Nolan, who has been struggling to shake off a back injury of his own in recent weeks, is confident his team-mates will prevail.

"These next two games are massive for us and I believe the lads can get the results we need," he said.

"On our day we can beat anyone.

"We haven't done that enough this year, we have not played like Bolton Wanderers should play or how Bolton Wanderers used to play, and that's hurt us.

"That's why we are where we are. We are deeply hurt by the position we are in and we know it's going to be tough.

"But we're starting to get something back and, if we can produce performances like we did on Saturday, I'm sure it will start to go our way again and we'll get what we deserve. We've had a few injuries when we didn't need them and it's going to be really tough for me, because I'm the worst watcher in the world, but I have full faith in the lads that they can produce the results we need.

"I seriously hope that I'm out for the next four or five games, not just the two, because that will mean the team's winning and doing well."

Nolan, who argued fiercely that Wanderers should have been awarded a penalty 16 minutes from time when Javier Garrido appeared to handle a Kevin Davies header, considered himself unlucky to be booked for his 34th minute challenge on City's Croatian full-back Vedran Corluka.

Initially there were fears that referee Andre Marriner might have shown the red card, but Nolan said the challenge looked much worse than it was and claimed the defender had over-reacted.

"I thought Corluka did make a bit of a meal of it," he said. "I was expecting him to get up and get on with it, but he didn't."

Once he grows up and stops berating referees, he'll barely reach 5 yellow cards in a full season.

I hope you are out for the next 4-5 games aswell, your a stump!.So thats Jussi/Gardner & Nolan out, none of which can pass a ball to a Bolton player!!.

kev may be suspended but his mouth will at least play, needs a rest if only to get fit but it looks like we don't have a fitness regime and doesnt it sow.

Unlucky to be booked for the tackle? It happened right in front of me in ESL and at the end of the game you could still see the 10ft skid mark from the challenge. It was stupid, given the current climate and focus on such tackles after the Martin Taylor incident.

Nolan should engage brain (if he has one).

He is meant to be the LEADER on the pitch for crying out loud!!

I can only think this may be a blessing in disguise, well, as long as his replacement is not McCant.

Make him an appointment at Weightwatchers while he's doing nothing.

I don't think as many of his bookings have been for dissent as Diouf who has been booked 15 times this season and 12 of which have been for dissent.
I don't think Gardner has been the same player since he came back from his kneee injury for the second time but can see that Samuel and McCann will step into the breach.
One thing Nolan did give us was the odd goal...so now we look even less likely to score...

Nolan's absence does not help our cause, in my view. In so far as anyone is capable of getting a goal against Arsenal, he would perhaps have been one of two- an indictment of us, I know.

Realistically, we only have Birmingham in our sights at the moment and they have the option, which we lamentably failed to take, of attacking Manchester City next week.

But Arsenal do, in one respect, suit us more than any of the other big four teams. As we saw yesterday they still don't like the physical game and they are very vulnerable at set pieces.we'll miss Nolan for this kind of game.

I hope that Megson is brave enough to support Davies from the off with Helgusson and Stelios and Diouf. McCann too deserves his chance but if we sit back with 3-5-1 including Campo and McCann and do not take the combat to the Arsenal end then we'll surely be 2 or 3 down before we know it.Indeed the thought of Campo, Cohen, Taylor and McCann v Fabregas and Flamini and co is quite alarming as is Samuel v Hleb or Van Persie cutting in.

But we have a chance and must somehow take it or try to.Personally of course, I'd like us to survive. But actually retaining status in the Premier League, now a difficult challenge, not in our own hands, is less important to me than that we should at least make an effort. In recent weeks we have capitulated from the technical area, which is depressing beyond measure to this long time fan.

Nolan out, we already know that Meite is out due to a spat with Megson ! And it seems Campo also had a spat with Megson on saturday, so, will he be out as well ?

Seems to me, the one who should be out is Megson !!! Closely followed by Gartslime !

A supporter is somebody who supports somebody or something, such as a cause, idea, course of action, or sports team - I think many of the contributors to this site fall way below this description. I am no longer a supporter as I do not attend the matches anymore I am merely a fan. I stopped attending regularly after Big Sam took us into the premiership. Whilst teams are assessed on results and Big Sam has taken my team to heights I never imagined possible he has also taken us to a place were results seemed to be the only thing and premiership survival was a so called must have. However 1-0 home wins against Watford 0-0 draws versus Fulham Boro and Sothamton in seasons gone by have hardly set my world alight. Unfortunately I also have memories good and bad of the following Big Sam scoring against Sunderland in front of the Embankment. Missing out on prmotion twice under Ian Greaves. Frank Worthington scoring the winner against Blackburn. We are thye champions against Fulham and standing on the pitch. Willie Morgan on the wing. Losing 1-0 to Everton in the League Cup Semi Final 3-3 versus Newcastle in the cup with Paul Jones header. Stan Anderson, George Mulhall, Charlie Wright. Tad Novak on the wing Dusan Nikolic. Jim McDonagh scoring against Burnley. John McGovern. Aldershot at Burnden sending us down to Division 4. Northern Final win at Blackpool. Lowest crowd ever versus Rochdale. Regular derby defeats to Burnley, Tranmere, Bury, Stockport and Wigan. Beating Brighton as a cup upset when they played in a deck chair strip. Twerton Park watching us against the Gas at Bath. Notts County humilation at Meadow Lane in the play offs. Dave Felgate waving to his mum in the crowd at Southampton. FA cup wins against Liverpool, Everton, Aston Villa, Arsenal. Ian Stevens scoring with his face against Chesterfield to come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Saltergate in a FA cup replay. John McGinlay penaly versus Preston to get promotion. Last night at Burden. Best Bolton TEAM ever the 100 goals 98 points team. Perfect symetry with with 5 left sided players 5 right sided. Gerry Taggart and Chris Fairclough wasting Wolves in the Battle of Burnden. The "FOOTBALLING" years of Greaves. Rioch and Todd. Despite of all this I am still alive the club still exists and what is so wrong with games against Wolves Sheffield and Preston if that is what will be. Bring back the entertainment, bring back the wingers and bring back players that we can associate with and support but most of all support or Fcuk off

What I am saying is that if you are a genuine supporter I have evey admiration for you but I have never booed or ctiticised those on the pitch yet so called supporters on here seem to take great pleasure in doing so and I am sure they take that to the game. My comments are directed to those - like myself who do not support (attend) anymore - leave it to those who do and are willing to get behind the players. I respect anyone still "supporting" who was not alive when I was at the lowest crowd and anyone who was also there and still going. I reserve judgement on anyone else who has the audacity to call someone an arm chair fan having myself supported the team through its darkest days rather than these so called glorious years.

Exactly and criticising and getting on the back of your own team does what? I am directing this toward the hate Gartside, hate Nolan, Hate Hunt hate the style of play people . Embankment Bob you seem to not understand my point and the fact that those who continue to support have my admiration it is this other section of supporters that do not - Lets be real the club does not need their brand of support or money either as it has enough money from TV and player sales to last a lifetime - Since 1973 I would love to see what the clubs balance on transfers has been :-) I remember being in Europe was playing St Mirren and Partick Thistle in the anglo scottish cup. Oh happy days

This time last year, attendances were falling despite league position, as a direct result on the style of football BSA was producing. That style however was the only reason we reached such lofty heights, and LSL’s attempts to change fell on rocky ground, because the club had neither the resources or the existing players to deliver the change.
For me the BSA era gave me so many brilliant memories, so much to be proud of, and hopefully enough of a base to build again. What I think dazzer is eluding to is that the rebuild must include a footballing style that is pleasing to the eye, and so attract the fans back. One think is clear though. If the worst happens, a rebuilding programme needs a fresh young managerial mind, not the empty void that is Gary Megson.

The world and its dog knows we need to play 4 4 2 next saturday with Davies & Helga as the 2. How are we going to get smeggers to realise this??
If we sit back playing defensive 4 5 1 we will get picked off, they will pass the ball round us we haven't the pace / class to stop em.
To me the only way is long ball in ya face football, call it "allardyce" football.
Even wenger admitted that when Anelka came on and chelski played long ball (LOL) it caused them problems. (Why do chelski not get slagged off when they play long ball or as the southern journos call it passing the ball down the channels???)

Most of our team couldnt pass water let alone pass the ball from one end to the other.
Still believe we cant sit back though or we will get murdered against Arsenal, they will still be smarting after yesterday and will see Saturday as a chance to exorcise their Reebok ghosts!!

York white I think you are getting my comments - 10 people only believing and supporting is better than 100 whereby 30 do not. I remember reading the programmes in the 90s whereby every single player said the premiership would be not good for those not in it. There are 4 teams that can win it for the foreseeable future we as a club seemed to have given in on the only things we have a real chance of winning and that is the cups. Why - In pursuit of premiership survival at all costs and any style of play. I choose not to watch my team anymore cos its boring. The club has ripped off genuine supporters with its incredulous desire for premiership survival by playing a weakened team in Lisbon. Give us back our FOOTBALL team

It seems that a leopard cannot change its spots:-all Megson's old failings at other clubs are resurfacing: upsetting and falling out with key players; stubbornly sticking to defensive, cautious tactics; refusing to see what all the fans and media experts can see.

Now is the time to be bold and play with two up front:-it worked in our victory away at Reading so why has Megson not tried it since?

Now is the time to discard stubbornness and admit he was wrong to allow the sale of Anelka without lining up a suitable replacement, and wrong to continue to rate Rasiak and Samuel: he must not fill up the bench with players who contribute nothing but must include other striking options and players with energy and zest.
Now is the time to make sure there is no confrontation with key players:- we all know that Diouf and Campo respond best to praise and an arm round the shoulder, not an icy blast.
If he does not change from his previous track-record and learn from his previous errors, we may be sunk.

From Daily Mirror today:

THE ANORAK SAYS . . .

Bolton have not scored a goal in seven hours and five minutes of football.

What about a radical change? Steinson to centre Forward and give him the number 9 jersey? Helgusson and Davies to rotate assisting in a 4 4 2. NO MORE 4 5 1. I know Gretski is a wonderful defender but he looked our best chance of a goal on Saturday. We NEED goals.

Come on you Whites!!

And WHEN will Negson realise that Stelios should be subbed at least twenty minutes before the whistle to give him a chance to settle in. He is our natural match winner.
Posted by: Paul, Deane on 12:54pm Mon 24 Mar 08
As someone has already mentioned, the silence from Gartside is deafening. Surely even he must be appalled at what is happening, if we lose on Sat, which seems more than likely, and Brum beat City, we are going to be in an almighty mess this time next week.

Surely the time for action has arrived, even though he would have to admit he was wrong and the fans were right, over the Megson appointment. He has to do his job and take action to remove Megson NOW, before he can do any more damage to our club.

One of our big strengths under BSA was our togetherness and willingness to fight to the end, which now seems to be sadly lacking, no doubt due to Megsons total lack of man management skills.

As for Nolan, "on our day we can beat anyone", any chance of letting us know when this "day" is likely to be, as we have been waiting for it for the last 6 games.

Just watched an old episode of Dream Team this morning - the season finale to where they were forcibly relegated by the FA!!!!

I know its complete fiction etc... but the courage, the passion and the determind fight they players showed (as well as the management and directors) should surely show our club up for what it really is - PATHETIC.

We have a board who know nothing about football and are just interested in money - I have and will continue to show over and over again how Ajax and many other clubs overseas treat their loyal fans and still still make huge profits!!

We have a lower Championship manager pretending to try to be a Premiership manager - a manager who, like LSL has lost the backroom , beginning to lose the players, lost the fans and even lost the media.

We have players who do not give a **** as they know that no matter how they play they will recieve their weekly wage - which in many instances is much much more than 5 year anuual wage for the club fans!!!

Then the club itself - disrepected the League, the League Cup, the FA Cup and most importantly has disrepected and devalued the UEFA cup - to which our club SHOULD be punished (and I am a loyal fan for over 30 years!!!). A club that has no true amabition, no fight and most importantly no passion.

We deserve to go down, we deserve to go into administration and start next season on -10pts, we deserve to be fined, we deserve to be banned for one season (if we ever get there again) from European competitions. Bolton Wanderers deserves all that we get - and there is only one person to blame. PHIL GARTSIDE!!!!

BTW did you hear the Chelsea fans shout their discontent at Avram Grant whilst all wec ould hear from the Bolton fans where whimoers of a shout. Again, fans to blame for lack of passion!!!

I have only three things to say.

Let's save the recriminations and finger pointing for after the season's end. With players, coaches and supporters at each others throats we have next to no chance of survival so for God's sake some of you...and I include the likes of Campo who was substituted on Saturday because he was playing badly - get real and let's stick together at least until May 11th. We all know that mistakes - big ones - have been made and the time to start to rectify those is not just yet.

Secondly, get off Nolan's back. He was once again our best player on Saturday, running through a brick wall in the cause. Those who think he is not worth a place in our team might get the shock their brains obviously need when they see the clubs who will come in for him if and when we are relegated.

Thirdly, will those asking for Helguson's inclusion - I would totally agree he inproves our team - please pick up a paper, a match programme or read the BWFC website. He is injured again...you can't play injured playesr! Novel, I know but it tends not to work.

I have every faith in you.

Or could it be a Denis Law moment as Anelka scores the goal that sends you down.......

Well said Steve, I have called Nolan quite a lot recently, however, he did actually have a good game on Sat! We need to play 442 against the Gooners and stick it up em!!! Stelios must start the game!

MEGSON OUT GARTSIDE OUT
My word you have it bad mate, its not the end of the world. If we go down, then we go down we just have to accept that fact, far bigger clubs than BWFC have fallen from grace, i.e Nottm Forest (Megson was in charge there as well!!). Lets take out our recriminations at the end of the season. Also it pains me terribly to say this but just look at Blackburn and how they are run, its a well run run ship by Mr Williams.

Sorry to disagree with all your points, Steve

1. The fans have been remarkably good the past few weeks, considering the poor stuff served up. I can think of many other clubs where the dissent and protests would be much louder.

2. Nolan was not good, he was very average. I saw him puffing and panting, holding his side quite early in to the match. I didnt see one single creative bit of play from him.

3. Well, Im sorry, but I havent seen or read anything about the fitness of Helguson for weeks. Just assumed he was in Negson's naughty boy club. Please tell me where updates on the fitness and player availability is posted, as this would be interesting to read. I turn up expecting the Helguson/Davies combo and nobody near me knows why he is not there, so we must all be ignorant, or unable to read.

Nothing about his injury on the BWFC website or the Physioroom site either.

Does anyone know that he is DEFINITELY injured and when he will be available again??

FC United for me now.
A people's team.
Perhaps Bolton fans sick of your treatment should set up a fan's team ?

If you think Nolan was our best player, you must have an incredibly low benchmark and incredily high tolerance of mediocrity!!
