Megson reveals transfer frustration

By Marc Iles »

GARY Megson has spoken of his frustration so far in the January transfer window as he looks for talent to help pull Wanderers away from the relegation zone.

The Bolton boss has identified several players he thinks can take the club to safety, including Iceland international full-back Gretar Steinsson and Sweden star Johan Elmander.

But sealing the deals, claims Megson, is a task made more difficult both by the Whites' precarious league position and the fact he has widely-publicised funds to spend from the sale of Nicolas Anelka to Chelsea.

And though Megson is not short on ideas as to who he would like to bolster his squad, he freely admits the mission is made more difficult by his side's continuing inconsistency.

"It does make it harder to sign players," he said. "But it will make Roy Keane's (Sunderland boss) job more difficult and Paul Jewell's (Derby manager) job more difficult.

"I have been in this situation with West Brom. You know the players you want, but you don't always get the ones you actually need."

That's why you should have had replacements signed up BEFORE Anelka was allowed to leave, you miserable, naive lump of......How appallingly has our club been mismanaged since Sam's demise.

Come on can you imagine the outcry if Megson had signed a striker before we sold the Elk, I bet you would have been on here moaning of lack of ambition.. Our club has been mis managed for over a year now ever since the Big fella lost interest in us.

now why doesn't this story surprise me!!!!!!

Take out the fact that we are definitely struggling and will definitely go down at this rate aren't the excuses just the same as normal - go back to Summer, last January etc...

A pattern has taken hold.

GARTSIDE not spending
MEGSON not having enough clout to convince players
DAVIES doesn't givce a **** as he sits in his ivory tower just counting HIS money
DUCKWORTH and WARBURTON not saying anything as per usual and just sitting at their desk doing nothing but getting a wage!!!!

THE BOARD NEEDS TO GO NOW FOR THE SAKE OF THE CLUB, TEAM AND BRAND!!!!

Babylon,

Big Sam did not lose interest in the team - how could he create the ambition for the next level when he wasn't getting the money from the Board. He had to go to secure his own future and to get away from the Board who have destroyed this club, team and brand!!! (It was hard for us fans to take but it had to happen - hence the big fall-out between BSA and Gartside!!!)

Like I said yesterday the management can't or don't want to see the problem.

You really couldn't make this up.

A question to the board of Bolton Wanderers FC.

Do you want to go down and lose possibly 50% of your fan base or do you care about the club?

Don't suppose we will get an answer but I know what the majority of people on this forum will think.

Well, we better get some decent players in soon, our team at the current status isn't good enough and we need at least 7 pts from the next 3 games, this will bring Reading and Newcastle back into the mire. I just pray that last minute goal Blackburn scored isn't going to cost us! Watched Mcginley's goal against Hull last night on Utube, good to look back ,but I actually want to look forward as well.
Trying to keep the faith!

I was waiting for this story to come out, After our pathetic board decided to sell one of the worlds best strikers in january when we are in the mire, this is just an excuse not to spend all the money. Every year they say they are frustrated in the transfer market. With a crap manager, crap unambitious board who think it`s good business to sell your best goal scorer, they will get what they deserve and that is relegation. Will Garside say it is good business if go down..

didnt derby manage to sign about 4 players over the weekend , so whats megson on about , its difficult for derby , sunderland and so on to atract players to there clubs ... the bottom line is that money is an issue , the either dont want to pay the wages of transfer targets or dont wanna pay the asking price for the players ... unfortunity other clubs hold out for the a good valuation before they may sell there star players ... not like us i suppose anelka was worth more then 15mil and other clubs rate there players more then we do

Steinsson deal should be done. He wants to leave and AZ want the money so they can bid for Alves. Gudni recommends the deal for both club and player. Sunderland are after J. Roberts, reportedly for 2 mill. He would be a great signing for this amount so why are we not linked, him and Davies up front, Roberts feeding of Davies.
Why have Derby signed 4 players because their manager is respected not like the ginger kid from East is East.
We will be bringing in at the last minute, out of date players who can't find a club and are after a free meal ticket.

"Five years ago I came here on trial, but I was not good enough; now it seems I am.

"It is a wonderful club where many Icelanders have played."

Steinsson is likely to sign a three-year contract with the option of a further 12 months, with Bolton to pay a fee in the region of 4million euros (£3million).

"Derby signed 4 players" Yes but they're all bobbins. Nobody else has signed big apart from Chelski that is. These things always take time. I blame it on the agents rather than megson. As soon as a player hears your interested in him his agent then stats touting them about. Its only when none of the bigger boys want them that the likes of Bolton sign them. I dont like it but thats the way it is

We might as well accept now that we are going down. Megson's statement is part of the preparation for that. Manipulating the fans again. Although we will not spend the Anelka money, you can guarantee that the debt will go up. Always does, no matter how much money we take in. Still in true LSL fashion we should look at the positives. Here are a few. Anyone like to add?
1. Fatface Gartslime will not be able to hobnob with the Premiership's great and good like some Johnny Bigtime.
2. Local derbies at Blackpool, Preston and Burnley. And in seasons to come Bury, Accrington and Morecombe. (Morecombe!Licking my lips already).
3. We can re-sign Trevor Morgan. What a legend.
4. No queues for pies at half-time.
5. They can lay off dozens of those fat-ar*ed stewards and just open the West stand lower.
6. Far less silly kick-off times to suit Sky.

The list goes on. Bear in mind that season ticket prices will go up. Remember that fiddle. When we are promoted ticket prices go up because of the higher standard, when we are relegated prices go up because there are more games.
Contributions gratefully recieved.

I agree but at the end of the day, if a player is wanted by WH, Spurs etc the chances are hes gonna go there. Its the London pull. Thats why Benayoun went to WH istead of us. I know hes now up north but that with Liverpool a whole different game ball. they and i mean the 3rd division management should just leave quietly and get someone who cares and gets the job done and not ones who are full of excuses and bleeding the club dry

why is that?

Gartside fell out of favour with Big Sam becuase Big Sam wanted to take the club to the next level. Gartside not prepaired to give money for transfers. No new people came to the club because of so-called lack of money!!! (sure - so where has the best part of 80 million disappeared to then - with all the refinancing, new sponsorship deals, TV rights etc....)

What could Sam do but use the players he had - knowing that some of the players were not good enough and could do NOTHING about it.

Why do you think he left the club - wouldn't you knowing that you wanted to take the club places but the board would not back you at all!!!

BOARD MUST GO FOR THE SAKE OF THE CLUB< TEAM AND BRAND!!!!

I said at the beginning of January Anelka would go for £15 million and Bolton at best would spend £5 or £6 million. Forget the `spin` and excuses the board are so predictable. Look back at last January when Bolton were in the top four and urgently needing quality to strengthen an over achieving team. What did we do? Nothing because Mr Ed and the rest of the board haven`t got the passion and ambition to take the club forward. Finally, I predict that quality players will, at the last minute, join other premiership clubs. The reason will all come down to Bolton being the premiership paupers.

Big Sam brought in at least 3 players from the youth squad and was prepared to give others from the youth squad a chance every now and again - which is more than can be said for more than half the teams in the Premiership.

Where do you thin players like Nolan, Hunt and Vaz Te came from????

Sam created the youth's own management team and it was them that was bringing players through and Sam did experiment with a few - remember a youth squad only produces a very small percentage of decent players (whether they are British youth squad teams or overseas)!!!

Megson leaves the day to day to mr Knox however, it is his training methods and team formations which enter the field of play. The reason we do not go for Diarra is that he wants 85K per week and that is a wage we cannot justify on a holding midfielder. If Megson had done his job correctly we would have had at least 2 players in before last weekend and therefore, on balance he has to shoulder a lot of blame for his ineptness and negative football he thinks will win games he should be ashamed about cashing his wage packet as he flaunts the trade description act claiming he is a premiership manager. LSL caused so much upset that any man they brought in would have created an upsurge of form from the players and it is now that a good manager earns his wage. To go out of the FA cup was a big mistake as we needed to keep our home record intact and then to justify the weak team he put out when fans gave up their time to watch the game was a disgrace. In view of the free weekends we have in the cup we will now have to play behind close door matches to keep the player match fit. The fans chanting the idiots name gives him a false sense of well being the rest of the fans wants results not only on the field also in the transfer market and we are waiting for the delivery.
