A STAG party reveller had to convince airport authorities he was not an escaped convict after a prank left him in handcuffs.

Philip Daulby flew to Amsterdam with friends last Friday thinking that, as neither groom nor best man, he would be playing the party tricks rather than being the victim.

But following a drunken Saturday night, the 25-year-old found himself in handcuffs with the key probably thrown into a canal by a friend.

Philip, who lives in Greenmount, Bury, said the handcuffs were supposed to be used on the bridegroom, his friend John Wilson, from Newcastle.

"We were all very drunk and I ended up becoming handcuffed to one of the lads," he said.

His friend managed to free himself, but Philip was left with one cuff dangling from his wrist.

"Then the key disappeared," he said. "I think it was thrown into a canal.

"To make sure that I wouldn't become handcuffed to anything else, I locked the other cuff on the same left wrist. It was all my stupid fault."

The sheet metal worker ended up spending the rest of the weekend break in handcuffs and security officials at Amsterdam airport were less than amused.

While the rest of the party relaxed in the departure lounge, Philip was taken to side room to for questioning.

"They kept me there for half-an-hour, asking me what I was doing in the country," said Philip.

"They thought I was an escaped prisoner. I really thought I was going to miss the plane." After a return journey on Sunday night, in which he endured much laughter at his expense, he went to Whitefield fire station, where it took firefighters more than 30 minutes to remove the cuffs.

I wonder how they get hold of these stories in the first place. Surely he hasn't gone to the BN with this himself?

why are you people sooo moany??? the guy had some harmless fun, what do you expect him to do?? stay in the handcuffs forever. you dont complian when a cat gets suck up a tree and the fire service are 'called out', knowing full well the cat can rescue itself. for heavens sake, lighten up!!!!!!!!!! i found it very amazing, i dread to think what the world would be like if you were in charge!!!!!

Laura, if I was you I would get out more.

This guy is a sheet metal worker, has he not got the capability of removing these himself or getting a work colleague to?

I can't remember seeing an article about Police rescuing a cat, and yes I would complain. These people are highly trained FIREFIGHTERS, they have to mop up the consequences of enough stupid actions without removing handcuffs from drunks, taking fat people to hospital or "rescuing" cats that do not need rescuing in the first place

Keith it's you that needs to get about a bit more. You sound a real miserable to**er to me, perhaps you should start smoking again.

Excuse me Keith, it would cost the NHS more if he or his co-worker to remove the handcuffs if an accident were to occur!!! Then you would have something to complain about.

Also, i didnt mention the police resucing a cat, i said fire service, which im sure there have been. see link - its not the fire service nor a tree, but the RSPCA wouldnt cut you free from hand cuffs. http://news.bbc.co.u

The fire brigade don't always rescue cats when requested to do so. They more often than not blast them with water (which makes them go higher and not help to get them down at all!)

Oh yes sorry he went to the fire station probably interrupted their locker bricking and graffitti spraying, my mistake.
They must have generously given up their own time to help this poor unfortunate victim of a drunken gang.

Nice to have something light hearted to read for a change, that not everything that's happening at our front door is all stabbings shootings and thefts. Nobody has been hurt and we can all have a laugh, I'm sure the firemen did!
