Bolton University is Britain's third worst, says Sunday Times

THE University of Bolton has been ranked worst in the North-west - and one of the worst in the country - by a "definitive" newspaper guide.

The town's university features bottom of a list of 12 regional institutions, to be published in the Sunday Times University Guide 2007 this weekend.

It ranks 121 out of 123 universities nationwide in what the newspaper claims to be "the definitive guide for prospective students".

The University of Bolton - which was awarded university status in 2004 - has fared badly against the nearby Universities of Manchester, Salford, Liverpool and Edge Hill, among others.

University of Bolton Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr Peter Marsh, said: "We take all newspaper rankings with a pinch of salt and advise all students and their parents to do the same.

"The Times newspaper's 2008 Good University Guide ranks us joint-first in the region for student satisfaction, eighth in the region overall and 93rd across the UK.

"Clearly there is great confusion for everyone. We advise potential students and their families to attend open days and see universities for themselves. That is the way to make a valid judgement."

The University of Lancaster topped the Sunday Times regional table with a national ranking of 18, compared to Bolton's 121. The Universities of Oxford and Cambridge topped the national table, gaining the maximum overall score of 1000. Bolton gained 316 points overall but achieved a 74.4 per cent score in the guide's student satisfaction ratings - almost one per cent higher than the national average.

It last year featured at 115 out of 119 universities included in the 2006 guide.

Figures released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency earlier this year showed that more students quit courses at the University of Bolton than any other university in England and Wales. The 31.7 per cent drop-out rate falls well below the 22.2 per cent benchmark rate set by the agency, which released annual statistics in July.

Before it turned into a Uni, it had one of the best exam results in the country.

Sorry to say, it's not just about the quality of the education - it reflects once again what a dump the town centre is.
Why would a student choose to shop (pound shop,1 record shop)
eat (one half decent franchise -Olive Press), drink (violent and nasty at weekends) in this hole of a town centre.
Still the Bolton News assures us all is well, the regen department are happy (BTW they all live in the suburbs) and the Uni will put a spin on the rating.

the words silk purse and sows ear come to mind. Just getting the label of uni does not change the image or raise the standards.

So did I imagine reading a story on here a few weeks ago saying it was one of the best in the country?

That's a fall from grace to rival that of the Wanderers'.

But all the students think it's really good fun. And surely that's what counts, eh?

So much for your daft story last week, eh, BN?

I'm just being honest mate, but if this is rain, then you're going to be washed away soon enough.

I really really hope for your sake they have changed their ways since I was there.

My only advice is not to get out, but to just keep all your documents, receipts and statements in a safe organised place, because you're guaranteed to keep having to dig them up.

I still got a degree out of it though so I can't complain - and from what I understand there's a lot more going to be coming the Uni facilitywise.

Have a great time anyway.

Cynic hats on..has the UofB had time to be ranked ? It's only been open 2 minutes in it's present form. Ranked after say 5-10 years or so yes, but in such a short space of time ?

As far as the drop out rate, I don't believe this is the Uni's fault. The financial commitment of students, coupled with various factors (housing market, job market, £22,00 average debt) + no guarantee of a decent paid job for a degree in cushion making or similar worthless degree's. Is it a surprise ?

Bolton contrary to what the powers that be would have you think, is NOT a wealthy town in relation to having cash money. Many families cant afford to send their kids without raising the finance to do so. This is what's so bloody annoying between here and Scotland.

The University of Bolton take many things "with a pinch of salt" and this is one of many reasons why the university is at the bottom of the league tables. The university continues to put energy into producing ever more bizarre courses rather than sorting out the core issues that cause problems. Very often the university is aware of problems that exist but decide to do nothing rather than making the effort to resolve them. The approach to teaching, education and research is very variable throughout the different departments but is, on average, poor compared to the universities at the top of the league table. This is a strange and frustrating place to be a student and the abysmal completion rates are not the least bit surprising to recent former students. The university seems to be far too happy with the status quo instead of recognising that they need to challenge it in order to improve and compete with other universities. The Sunday Times have put the university in the correct position and the university would be wise to take note and make some fundamental improvements. The only good news is that there are some capable people working at the university – it is the approach and style of the university that has failed and led to the drop down the league tables.

I have just completed a degree course at the University and would like to champion its cause. It is important to put these findings into perspective. Firstly Bolton is a very new University in comparison to the rest and has had to adapt and make changes which i believe it has done admirably well. Secondly the University has a very high percentage of foreign students, many who are coming to this country for the first time. Inevitably some are unable to settle and return home not having completed the course leading to a high percentage of fall out. Thirdly the selection process is not as stringent as other universities leading to the University taking in students of a lower academic ability(like me). Again this will unfortuneatly produce a higher fall out rate as these type of students are often not able to cope with the pressures. The University of Bolton has a range of excellent facilities and from my own experience i can certainly say, it has a fantastic School of the Built Environment with a team of experienced, professional and committed staff members. If you are committed to the studies then the staff will do all they can to help you. So, if you are a student then ignore the findings and enjoy yourself. The rest of us must promote and support the University of Bolton as one of the great assets of our town.

I just had to have my say I am a student currently at the universaty have been since september just gone and Ive had a terible time thier in the small time ive been here carnt go into to much detail simply because it would be like writing a book. I am currently a student at Bolton University- overall the course and the teaching are excellent, however the number of my fellow students who are clearly incapable- many of whom can barely speak English- is ridiculous. I feel that this hinders my progress as so much time is taken in explaining really basic things. Though I do believe in widening access to education I do not believe that this should be at the expense of more academically able students. Though the uni provides good support for students who face language/academic barriers it seems clear that the entry requirements should be stricter.

Just popped in for a mo, what a laugh, i knew a former pupil at Bolton Uni, he could'nt spell either, he finally left to study crystals elsewere, They must be desperate to accept these no hopers onto their courses, i remember a downs syndrome bunch they used to use to make up the numbers in classes at other education establishments in Bolton, are they still doing the rounds? i would'nt be suprised,
