Paul Abbott, the creator of hit TV series, including Shameless and Clocking Off, was at the University of Bolton last night to inspire the next generation of scriptwriters.
He said it was critical to open the doors of writing and producing to new talent when he took part in “An Audience with Paul Abbott”.
Before taking a question and answer session, the award-winning writer and director said: “People feel so privileged to have got into the industry that they close the doors behind them.
“This mentality causes problems and has to be changed.”
He told the audience of around 100 university students and students from nearby colleges that his inspiration for material lay in what he saw in real life.
Mr Abbott said he used a pantomime style to win audiences over to Shameless, emphasizing the social theme running through the series.
Diane Barley, aged 32, who is studying for a diploma in stage, screen and creative writing, said: “He is an inspiration and to break into this industry is really hard. It is always important to find out how people like him have achieved what they have.”
Craig McDonnell, aged 33, who is studying media writing and production, said: “It is great that someone like Paul can take the time to talk to us about being a writer and a producer.”
