Flying high with Heathrow deal

TWO Bolton businesses have played a leading role in building the new Terminal 5 building at London's Heathrow Airport, which opened to the public today.

Watson Steel Structures, based in Lostock Lane, produced all the steelwork for the terminal's frame after its parent company, Severfield Rowan plc, was contracted by the British Airports Authority, Heathrow's owner and operator.

Watson's, in turn, contracted Leighs Paints, based in Kestor Street, to provide the coatings for the steel.

Watson Steel manufactured, delivered and erected 80,000 tonnes of steel on the terminal site during the course of its three-and-a-half year construction. The company also provided steel for the new control tower and several other small projects linked to the terminal.

Managing director Peter Emerson said: "A great proportion of the steel came out of the plant in Lostock. We had 120 guys on site erecting the steelwork and here, in Bolton, all our workforce were involved in the manufacture."

The new terminal cost more than £4 billion to build and is designed to handle 30 million passengers per year, which, on its own, would make it the fourth largest airport in Europe.

Each of the five floors is big enough to house 10 football pitches and there are 131 escalators and 178 lifts.

The building has Europe's largest single-span roof, measuring 400 by 150 metres. It was constructed in six sections over 10 months.

Mr Emerson said: "It took a significant proportion of our workforce, but we were also working on other projects, most notably the Emirates Stadium for Arsenal Football Club.

"We have been involved heavily since the late 90s. It has been a long hard road."

Leighs Paints was the major partner to Watson Steel, providing corrosion-protective coatings for the steel.

Anthony Ward, spokesman for Leighs Paints, said: "This was an extremely prestigious project for Leighs to be involved in."

They may want to keep quite about being involved in Heathrow's terminal five. It's currently making our country a laughing stock.
