Body in house woman 'not murdered' - police

A MURDER inquiry launched into the death of a Bolton woman has been closed.

Detectives were called in when the body of 50-year-old Janet Brown was discovered at her home in Harwood.

They initially suspected her death was suspicious and launched an investigation.

A post-mortem examination failed to establish a cause of death and it was revealed yesterday that, after a number of tests, Ms Brown's death was no longer being treated as suspicious.

A man arrested in connection with her death has been told he will face no further questioning.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "A 39-year-old man was arrested and had been released on bail until April 6.

"Further tests showed that the death is no longer suspicious and the man has been released without charge."

Paramedics had been called to Ms Brown's home in Bramhall Avenue, Harwood, at around 7.30am on Tuesday, February 5. They alerted police that the death may have been suspicious 40 minutes later. Ms Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.

Forensic teams then combed the area for clues and a 39-year-old man was arrested for questioning on suspicion of murder.

Ms Brown had worked at Bolton At Home and, before that, worked as a housing officer for Bolton Council for 14 years. She had a daughter Gemma, aged 22, and a three-year-old granddaughter.

Neighbours on the quiet street were shocked when they learned of her death.

One neighbour said yesterday: "I couldn't believe that something like this could happen on my doorstep. It was an awful situation for the poor man who was suspected of something that he didn't do. It must have been dreadful for him and his family."

An inquest will now be arranged to try to establish the cause of Ms Brown's death.
