VOTE: Should more be done to encourage marriage?
MARRIAGE rates have fallen to the lowest level since records began.
Policies that "penalise families" came under fire in the wake of provisional figures for 2006 which reveal the number of marriages fell four per cent to 236,980 compared to the previous year.
The figures published by the Office for National Statistics show the marriage rate for men over 16 was 22.8 per 1,000, and for women 20.5,the lowest rate since 1862.
The decrease in the number of marriages has been partly put down to a change in the law in February, 2005, designed to crack down on "sham" marriages carried out for purposes such as securing a visa.
Reader Poll Should more be done to encourage marriage?
Yes 66.7% | | No 33.3% | |
|
But Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said: "This is a sad indictment of the Government's policies which have penalised families and fuelled family breakdown. Stable families are the best formula for bringing up children and preventing delinquency, anti-social behaviour and crime, so a failed family policy is itself a major cause of crime."
Mr Davis' criticisms of the marriage statistics were echoed by Jill Kirby, director of centre-right think tank The Centre for Policy Studies. She said: "It's obviously worrying that they have reached such a low ebb but perhaps not surprising in view of the lack of Government policy over the last 10 years encouraging marriage."
A spokesman for the Department for Children, Schools and Families said: "This Government supports marriage as it is a sound foundation for raising children. But we want to support all children and families, whether or not their parents are married."

I got married on Easter Saturday - we were not bothered about any incentives, we just wanted to show everyone how committed we were after 4 years together and have a big party!! It was a brilliant day. I think its up to the individuals, alot of my friends are not married - why should they feel pressure to get married if they are happy as they are?

Unmarried mothers that can't support their own kids is the real problem. Stop giving them council houses and other benefits then they will have to stay at home living with their parent(s).
The problem will soon go away.

Andrew, look what Ive found!!!
From the man himself.
Funny guy that Upton.....
My fiancé, upon getting engaged, went to her mother and said, "I've found a man just like father!" Her mother replied, "So what do you want from me, sympathy?"
You have two choices in life: you can stay single and be miserable, or get married and wish you were dead.
So I choose to get married to my beautiful wife 15 years ago. We now share everything, I even showed her how to drive although kept complaining that the car wouldn’t start in the bottom of the lake.
We eat out at least twice a week. She goes Tuesdays I go Thursdays.
Getting married is very much like going to a restaurant with friends. You order what you want, then when you see what the other person has, you wish you had ordered that.
I said to my wife, "You know, I was a fool when I married you." She replied, "Yes dear, but I was in love and didn't notice."
She then placed an 'ad' in the classifieds: "Husband wanted". Next day she received a hundred letters. They all said the same thing: "You can have mine."
After all that we had a son he grew up fast and started asking those awkward questions, "Daddy, how much does it cost to get married?" so I replied, "I don't know son, I'm still paying."
I never knew what real happiness was until I got married; by then it was too late.
Just think, if it weren't for marriage, men would go through life thinking they had no faults at all.
I learned quickly in that if you want your spouse to listen and pay strict attention to every word you say, talk in your sleep.
My wife is always claiming equality I say women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are beautiful.
She told me I should be more affectionate but complained when I got two girlfriends.
Marriage is still the most expensive way to way to get your washing, cooking ironing and cleaning done for free.
Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. A second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience.
Alas man is incomplete until he is married. Then he is finished.

Erica, Bury,
I watched something last night that made me squirm. Genuine asylum seekers to be sent back home to that butcher Mugabe. Now these people are in danger. Why are they being sent back, simple, money. As long as migrants flood in and do jobs for next to nothing then fine thinks Bottler. But this appalling govt will be sending back people in REAL danger. Bottler Brown and Labour a DISGRACE.

Now, marriage. Not relevant to many these days. Relationship stability and happines are surely far more important than a ceremony, bit of paper and tax code?

Decent families who bring up decent children, need to be founded by two decent people.
It's our decadent society which is turning decent people bad and offering no encouragement for scums to change their ways.
Money driven celebrity is the problem. Talentless people are made rich and turned into celebrity by others who get rich pickings from the ride.
The example given is reward stems from apalling, immoral behaviour and complete lack a of values.
How can marriage, built on trust and honesty survive such an onslaught?
Government/oppostion solution - [italic]bribe[/italic] them to stay together.

Marriage (or at least long term partnerships)should be encouraged. a stable family life is essential for young people to get a balanced view of right and wrong, and to see how adults should treat each other.
lots of couples fail at this though, and lots of single parents are excellent, but in general, i see the children from a stable two parent family do better in school, socially and in life.
the trouble is, in my experience, i am now worse off by £200 per month because my partner is working full time instead of part time. we don't get support with child care, or tax credits. yet someone not working as much as we are could end up with more money than us every month. not much of an incentive.
This leaks over to the couple vs single debate too. a single mother claiming working tax credits can get £180 per week, plus CSA maintenance up to £300 per month as well as a wage up to 16000 per year. Dad then has to pay a third of his wage in maintenance, as his ex partner is not considered when calculating the amount needed. Ie - dad pays total cost of living for child, mum pays 0%. Yet dad isn't entitled to tax credits as he isn't living with the child. it is a complete farce.
Tax credits are supposed to support families who have to pay for children, yet a non resident father (or mother) who has to contribute the total amount for their child isnt entitled!
the system needs changing, now, to support the people who support themselves. dishing out handouts to people not willing to work, support theirselves or their families or provide theri own home are damaging society on a whole new level. the extended family structure is missing, and it needs to be promoted, to save money for the country, and redirect support to parents who are willing to try!

Meanwhile Bors, this marriage thing....
Player, bottom line for me is kids need a good parent or parents. If parents are in a relationship it needs to be stable and happy. Those who perpetuate unhappy relationships 'for the sake of the children' only harm those children.
The benefits system in my opinion is now being used to prop up companies who do not pay living wages. Working Families Tax Credits are stupidly complicated to appky for and administer. Simplification of the tax system to benefit the lower paid and ensure the much higher paid pay their dues would be a key solution to a lot of issues.

Income tax should be the same for all regardless of personal circumstance.
Benefits for children should be phased out.
A more moral and responsible society should be encouraged.

Marriage was once based on love, support, through thick and thin. Now in this media crazy world, greed has taken over. If a partner struggles move onto the next. This is about standards and morals. There are none left.

i also agree that an unhappy relationship shouldn't be encouraged, the kids know, and can react. but the relationships with parents following a breakup should be positive, and where possible, jointly responsible for decisions, affection, providing etc. feelings for ex's shouldn't get in the way, (although they do, and probably always will)
i know its off topic, but this does seem to have turned into an open forum instead of a comments thread!

Andrew, I salute your ability to construct reasonable arguments despite numpties trying to change the debate to their single version view of life.

Disagree Sun. Should be a 1p band, then basic rate, higher rate and highest rate. And clamp down on avoidance. Then we can properly fund social housing etc.[/quote] I hate to see the rich getting richer but that is a problem with our materialistic, greedy society. It can't be solved through taxation. In fact it could be argued that high taxation encourages evasion.
If we are to promote a fair society then our rules need to apply fairly to all and not be based on personal circumstances.
When we begin to place more and more emphasis on personal circumstances. We enter the field of social engineering which rather than encouraging freedoms, erodes them. As is evident in our society today.

The most supportive family units I've witnessed first hand are those in the Asian and Jewish communities.
A lesson for many 'Christian' families.

i also agree that an unhappy relationship shouldn't be encouraged, the kids know, and can react. but the relationships with parents following a breakup should be positive, and where possible, jointly responsible for decisions, affection, providing etc. feelings for ex's shouldn't get in the way, (although they do, and probably always will)
i know its off topic, but this does seem to have turned into an open forum instead of a comments thread!
