WANDERERS have one foot in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup after a remarkable victory over Red Star Belgrade last night.

Gavin McCann's goal a minute before half time took the Whites to the top of Group F, but they must now wait for the final round of games on Wednesday, December 19, before they know for sure that they are through to the knockout stages.

They will qualify unless the Portuguese side, SC Braga, beat Red Star by two goals and Bayern Munich draw with Aris Thessaloniki.

But, for the 400 Bolton fans who celebrated in the Marakana Stadium, they have already done enough.

Manager Gary Megson, who fielded a "scratch" side, resting many of his Premiership regulars for Sunday's crunch clash with Wigan at the Reebok, wasn't concerning himself with the mathematics of qualification, though.

He was just happy to see his makeshift side become the first English team to win at the home of the former European Champions.

"We've done what we can do and if we don't qualify it's down to our two results at home," he said, reflecting on the Reebok draws with Aris and Braga. "We've had two terrific results away from home - the draw at Bayern Munich and now this one - but it's those two home results that have put us in this tenuous position."
